Tim’s Daily Bread Devotional 3.16.21

By March 16, 2021Daily Bread

I invite you to take a few moments with me to reflect on today’s Upper Room Devotional below.

Thank you for sharing this early moment of your day with me, with God, and with the thoughts and words of this reading that I hope you will carry with you throughout the coming day and night.

Today’s Scripture:

Psalm 61
Assurance of God’s Protection
To the leader: with stringed instruments. Of David.

Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to you,
when my heart is faint.

Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I;
for you are my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.

Tim’s Devotional Reflection for Today

What a powerful prayer to pray when our hearts are faint:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”  When we fell threatened:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”  When we feel at our wits’ end:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

In today’s reading from Psalms, the psalmist is pouring out his heart to God in a time of great need—at time when his “heart is faint.”  He is yearning for a place of refuge and safety and deeply desires that the Lord would hear his cries.

The Psalms, as the Bible’s hymnal or prayerbook, teach us to be prayerfully dependent on the goodness and grace and God.  They teach us to trust God and to trust that God is good.  Then, as we experience God’s goodness and faithfulness, we enter into that life-long task of learning to release control.

This Psalm reminds us that the Lord is a rock that is higher than we are, a strong tower, and a source of refuge for those who are weary. Turn to the Lord today and allow him to lead you out of a place of self-sufficient control and lead you into a posture of trust and gratitude for his faithful guidance and goodness in your life.

What a powerful prayer to pray when our hearts are faint:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for you are my refuge.”  When we fell threatened:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for you are my refuge.”  When we feel at our wits’ end:  “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for you are my refuge.”

There is a lot of theology woven in to hymns. To enhance today’s reading, I recommend listening to “Saranam, Saranam”. I hope you will take a few moments to let the words of this message and the emotion that always connects us to music connect with your soul. Listen to this hymn on SoundCloud.

Thank you for sharing this early moment of your day with me, with God, and with the words and music that I hope you will carry with you throughout the coming day and night.

I am so grateful for you, for our church, and for the Love that will see us all through this very difficult time. Please stay safe and well and we’ll be together again in spirit tomorrow morning!

Grace and Peace,

Dr. Tim Bruster
Senior Pastor
