It was a pleasure for me to preach in the sanctuary last Sunday, especially knowing that Dr. Zhenya Gurina-Rodriguez was using the same theme and scripture in her sermon in The Gathering! As a reminder, that theme is INVITED. We Invite. Jesus Transforms. We are doing this during August, in anticipation of an important time during September and October — when we will celebrate our community with one another and face life’s storms together.
This coming Sunday, Zhenya and I will both use John 1:43-51 as our biblical backdrop. It is the wonderfully rich account of Jesus inviting both Philip and Nathanael to follow him. Philip responds immediately and then proactively invites Nathanael to “come and see” Jesus as well.
During Holy Week of this year, I absolutely loved playing the character of Philip in the “Living Last Supper”. From that experience, I can now better imagine the joy and sincerity that Philip felt in his discipleship and witness to others.
Our invitations to others can have the same type of joy and positive results, even if the person we invite has doubts and pre-set opinions.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday in the Sanctuary.
