Grow Bible Study

Wednesdays, September 14 – November 14
6:00 – 7:00 pm | Room 350 & Zoom
Led by Rev. Zhenya Gurina-Rodriguez, PhD

GROW is a comfortable place for everyone — whether it’s your first time to participate in a Bible Study or you’ve been to many. It’s the perfect opportunity to engage in practical conversation about how scripture is meaningful and relevant today — which leads to greater meaning and direction in everyday life.

So whether you prefer to attend in-person on campus or on Zoom, whether you can come very week, every other week or occasionally as your schedule allows, we hope to see you at GROW!

This fall we are reading through the letter of James. This short letter has sparked a lot of conversations through the centuries. Martin Luther dismissively called it an “epistle of straw”, but John Wesley saw it central for Christian life. I take John Wesley’s side of the argument – it is one of my most favorite books of the Bible. I cannot wait for our reading and discussions!

We are ordering a dinner for us. You are welcome to bring a side or a desert! Suggested donation for the dinner is $10.

We have childcare arranged for the Bible Study. Contact us for the details!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Zhenya at

  • Are you looking for a way to dig deeper, be challenged, consider alternative perspectives?
  • Are you ready for a fresh look at things you think you already know about Christianity?
  • Have you had years of experience in Bible Studies and group discussions of biblical themes and are ready to delve into something more challenging and provocative?

Join us for Living the Questions, described as “an open-minded alternative to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what’s next for Christianity.”

Each week, two classes will be offered (options for Thursday or Sunday mornings) the Revs Tom and Linda McDermott will lead this new study and discussion opportunity which will begin with a 15-20 minute video presentation by acclaimed scholars, theologians, and other experts including the likes of Brian McLaren, Amy Jill Levine, James Forbes, Bishop Minerva Carcano, Walter Brueggeman, John Dominic Crossan, Diana Butler Bass and many more.  These clever, articulate, thought-provoking and even humorous introductions promise to spark some great discussion for our group.

“Each time I have taught this study, I have been impressed by the depth of discussion it prompts, the “aha!” moments, and the breadth of consideration of thought. Tom and I are excited to lead these two study offerings, and we encourage all who are looking for a thought-provoking study of the Bible to join us!” ~ Rev. Linda McDemott

Bible Challenge 2022

January 1 – December 31, 2022 | Join any time
Register for the challenge
Do you want to know what’s in the Bible? Let’s read it together in 2022! You get to choose whether you want to read the entire Bible (about 20 minutes a day) or only New Testament (about 5 minutes a day). Consider using an audio Bible and listening to it — that’s a great option!
We believe that God speaks to us through the reading of the Scripture. When you follow our daily reading plan, you get to hear God speaking to you every single day. It will take just a few weeks for you to develop a habit of daily fellowship with God that could last a lifetime. Every day you will be drawn into a conversation with the Bible — you will ask questions, notice patterns, discover meanings that speak directly to your own life journey.

What about the stuff that looks confusing and irrelevant? We will sort it out together. Here is how we will support you through this year:

  • Participate in our monthly conversation with Rev. Zhenya Gurina-Rodriguez, PhD, Rev. Phyllis Barren, and Rev. Lance Marshall to discuss the history, cultures, geography, meanings of the Bible. We will meet on the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm in-person and on Zoom.
  • Or watch our monthly lessons on-demand online (TBD).
  • Ask us ANYTHING! Yes, just send an email ( or( and we will help you. No question is unimportant! If you raise it, it is valid.

Let’s be real, some of us will fall behind or skip some days! It’s ok. If you can, catch up. If you missed too much, just join us where we are at the moment.

Everyone is welcome to participate! Whether you have read the Bible your entire life or this is going to be your first time opening it — take up the challenge! Choose to read the entire Bible (Full Plan) or only New Testament only (Lite Plan). You will have our support throughout the entire year. This is what your daily readings will look like:

Full Plan for Day 1

Genesis 1, 2:1-17
Matthew 1
Psalm 1
full plan pdf

Lite Plan for Day 1

Matthew 1

Here is what you need to do next:
  • Register for the Bible Challenge

  • Download the full or lite plan.
  • Decide when and where you will be reading the Bible every way.
  • Put our monthly meetings on your calendar (first Thursday of the month, starting on January 13).
